SARDIS BAPTIST CHURCH has a rich history; dating back before the formation of Hart County itself. Over the decades, we've seen generations of families come to Christ and serve Him faithfully. Time and again, the Lord has been generous in His mercy and grace to our church. Sardis Baptist Church began as a log cabin structure in 1803. Sardis has been serving the Kingdom of God for over 200 years.
In 1830, a frame building 30 feet by 45 feet was constructed, and moved to the present landsite the current facilities sit on today. In 1879, Sardis built its next building, and was dedicated on July 4, 1880. The sanctuary was constructed in 1923 to accomodate the need for more space. During this time the great depression struck, and the Church was forced to borrow money from the Home Mission Board to complete the building and furnish it. Today, that facility is now the home of our Youth Program ministry.
As the Sunday School attendance grew, the need for additional space brought about an annex to the sanctuary. This was completed in the later 1950’s. In the fall of 1961, a new pastorium was constructed. That house still stands. Because of growth needs, in 1970 an educational facility was added to accommodate children and add office space. That facility is presently used for the same functions. A new sanctuary and educational facility were completed and dedicated in 1980. This is our present day sanctuary Sardis Church gathers and worships God. It was built to accommodate over 700 people. It also includes a fellowship hall, kitchen, additional classrooms, and a music suite.
Missions have always been a strong component of Sardis Baptist Church. The Church was instrumental in planting and establishing other churches throughout its history, including Line Baptist Church in 1844; Cedar Creek Church in 1878; and establishing a Sunday School at Oak Bower Church in 1921. In 1878, Sardis helped establish for African Americans, a building of worship that continues to exist today, serving the Lord.
In the late 1990s, Sardis purchased an adjacent lot and house. Much work was completed to convert it into a residence, hosting missionaries returning “home” for a much-needed sabbatical. This unique ministry has touched the lives of many missionaries and their families, serving around the world.
Sardis recently completed another building program – an endeavor that brought to the church a new Fellowship Hall and Gymnasium. As we continue building the spiritual foundations our forefathers established in years gone by, these new buildings will help us develop ways to fulfill God’s vision and purpose for His Church at Sardis.
In 2025, there was a re-modeling project that moved our office space to a more desirable location within the church building.
From its earliest beginnings in a log structure in 1803 to the present, Sardis has built a legacy for generations past and for generations to come. That legacy is one of faith and faithfulness (Hebrews 11); loving and honoring our Almighty God (Psalm 78:4); serving others and our own (1 Peter 4:10); sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ through every resource in and through our church, our homes, our community, our state, our country and the world (Matthew 28:19-20).
